pmi minnesota chapter

Message from the President

What were you doing in 1984?

Some of you were just beginning your career in project management, and others were just entering the world of life as we know it. Also in 1984, professional project managers in Minnesota founded a PMI Chapter to join the already 15-year-old Project Management Institute & nonprofit association.

In 1984, there was…. No public internet. No Microsoft Windows. No high-capacity laptops.

So what was the work environment like in 1984?

1984 was 10 years before the World Wide Web was born. It was the year Ronald Reagan was re-elected as president; the telephone monopoly Bell System was officially dismantled, AT&T launched; and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was born.

A floppy disk was the thumb drive of its day.  It installed software, and it let you back up and transfer files.

Almost no one had a mobile phone. They were huge and cost $4,000 (about $9,000 today).  And we think $1,000 is expensive.  Instead, people used pagers. You sent a message and then had to find the nearest phone to call someone back.

People bought music, recorded it, and listened to it on cassette tapes.

Theory of Constraints (TOC) was Introduced by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt.

First published by the PMI as a white paper in 1987, the "PMBOK Guide" was an attempt to document and standardize accepted project management information and practices. The first edition was published in 1996, followed by a second in 2000, and a third in 2004, and a few more since. The guide is one of the essential tools in the project management profession today and has become the global standard for the industry.

The first certification exam was held at PMI '84 in Philadelphia, October 6, 1984. Forty-three individuals passed and became the first Project Management Professionals (PMPs).

1984 was an important year for our Chapter; it is the year we formed as a Chapter to became part of PMI GHQ. Additionally, we agreed, and still do today, to adhere to their bylaws, policies and standards of what it means to be a Project Management Professional. That was 35 years ago.

In the past 35 years, PMI-MN has developed into a leading Chapter which other Chapters look up to and reach out to for advice, e.g. programs, seminars, membership & volunteer growth as well as PDD Speaker suggestions. Yes, we are fortunate to be part of an amazing market which consists of several leading fortune 500 companies and to be known as the Silicon Valley of healthcare.

PMI-MN organizes and hosts one of the top largest PDDs in the world.  Thank you to all of the leaders before us for their efforts.  Our Twin Cities is home to some amazing speakers and presenters, and this year, 83% of our PDD Speakers are from MN.  That is a first.  You asked for that, and we listened.

Next month on August 10th, the Chapter will be hosting our 3rd Annual Membership St. Paul Saints Game Event. This year we celebrate and recognize our 35 successful years as a thriving PMI Chapter.  I’m excited for all of us to unite as a PMI-MN member by wearing a Chapter t-shirt, sitting together, and be recognized on the jumbotron.

It is an honor to be a part of this cutting-edge PMI Chapter and realize our growth & successes. Chapter members, we are an exceptional Chapter because of members like you.

On another note, I am happy to report our GAAP (General Accepted Accounting Principles) Audit for the 2018 Fiscal Year has been completed and is available for review on our Chapter website.  In reviewing the audit, you will note our independent auditor stated they found no problem with the accounting procedures used by PMI Minnesota, nor any discrepancies with the financial records for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2019.  The financial statement disclosures are neutral, consistent and clear.  Please take a moment to review the audit and feel free to reach out if there are any questions.

I am also happy to report at our July Board meeting we took the next step in finalizing our investment project.  An RFP is currently being drafted to go out to five investment firms.  In investing a portion of the Chapter funds, we will be able to expand the benefits that are provided to you as a Chapter member.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at the fun-filled Saints Game on August 10th

Regards,

Janice Pyka PMI-Minnesota Chapter, MPM, MPA

PMI-Minnesota Chapter President

Volunteers of the Month

The PMI-MN Chapter is honored to present Jacque Ince and Francine Dupont as our June/July 2019 Volunteer of the Month.

Jacque and Francine were instrumental in delivering the PDD 2019 speaker line-up, coordinating the overall governance structure and detailed review processes, procedures and tools within the team.  They both, as the Committee Team Lead (Jacque) and a committed team volunteer (Francine), stepped in a phenomenal way to ensure that the speaker deliverables were completed on time, within budget and presented to the Board according to our Milestone plan.  Amazing job as new volunteers to PMI MN and the PDD program.  Thank you for your extraordinary effort to ensure the event's success!

PMI-MN would like to thank both of them for their time and dedication.

Congratulations!!!
