Message from the President

Some people are know-it-alls.

Do you think you Know It All?

What are you doing to continue your professional growth?

I have a suggestion – Project Management Institute’s 2019 Professional Development Days (PDD) that will kick-off at the St. Paul RiverCentre September 23 through the 26.

This year is different. “Why is that?” you may ask. This year, 83% of the speakers are local. WOW! That is a first. According to our surveys from previous years, this was 1 of the hot suggestions from attendees like you. The Twin Cities has a strong, savvy business market with several top speakers right in our backyard. So, Jacque Ince and his PDD Speaker Team set out to build those relationships with key speakers from the Twin Cities, and guess what? They were all thrilled to be invited to speak at our prestigious event! There were many more he wanted to include than we had room for, consequently Jacque had to insist, “Wait until next year”.

In addition, the majority of our speakers are new! They’re primed with exciting ideas and fresh topics for you to learn and grow from, which is something to look forward to. We have also heard that attendees prefer to hear from new speakers because when we bring back a previous speaker with a new topic, it still tends to be the same. Ergo new is good and new is exciting and new is new speakers with new topics and new things to learn.

Ruth Birkholz, PDD Chair, and Kimberly Berger, PDD Vice Chair, have also embraced what other PMI Chapters offer for up-and-coming project management students: new student pricing. Each of us realize the cost of education, so let’s give back to the next generation and offer student pricing at $25 per day. Typically, not all PDD classes fill up, so let’s invite the next generation to learn alongside seasoned project managers and forge those relationships to help one another. That is what our PMI-MN Chapter community is all about, right? Networking and supporting one another, both professionally and personally. One never knows who we will learn from, even if it is someone much younger than us. Keep an open mind.

And ... there is more new this year?! We have, for the first time, a new Title Sponsor for our amazing event. An educational institution that has been a longtime supporter of our Chapter and PDD is dedicated to support us once again.

Thank you to The College of Saint Scholastica, a private independent college with its main campus in Duluth, Minnesota, for stepping up to be our 2019 PDD Title Sponsor. This complements our new student pricing very nicely.

Finally I I would like to share with you a little bit about our Keynote Speaker , Betsy Allen-Manning. Betsy Allen-Manning is known as one of the top leadership speakers & human behavior experts nationwide!   Have a look at one of her presentations here.  We are especially riveted about her engaging energy.

Fellow project managers, we must always keep learning and keep getting better because failed projects cost an enormous amount of resources. Visit PMI-MN 2019 PDD, and join us for 2019 PDD to get Energized, Transformed and to Succeed in your professional world.

PMI-MN Chapter Members, here’s to an All New Exciting PMI-MN 2019 PDD.  Be sure to post your comments and photos during PDD to our Chapter social media pages and use #pmimn2019pdd or #pmimnpdd2019 to tag our Chapter.

Regards,

Janice Pyka PMI-Minnesota Chapter, MPM, MPA

PMI-Minnesota Chapter President

PMI 50th Year Anniversary is a time to celebrate and recognize the professionals behind the projects that transform the world. We’re excited to celebrate our 50th Year Anniversary and want to take this time to thank all project professionals – PMI members, credential holders, volunteers — for not just delivering successful outcomes, but also in making a difference. This event is also a great opportunity to network and meet other fellow Project Management Professionals while celebrating our 50th year together.

The event will be held on September 25th between 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at the St. Paul RiverCentre, and is open to all PMI Minnesota Chapter members and PDD attendees. There will be appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages free of charge. Alcoholic beverages will be available at the cash bar.

With every contribution, your effort has made a lasting impact on the world. Let’s continue to strive forward and accomplish even bigger projects for the coming year.

Pledging Your Commitment

Our 50th Anniversary is a time to reflect on the achievements of project managers and recognize the progress that the profession as a whole has made. We also see it as a time to pull together in service, contributing our collective skills and passion, and also in making a difference in the world together. To accomplish this, PMI is supporting the United Nations’ mission to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, and take actions that advance societal goals.

Make a difference and join us on our cause by pledging your commitment here.

“Is Consulting Right for you?”

FREE WEBINAR for Project Managers

August 29 | 12:00 pm CST | RSVP

Consulting can be a GREAT way to get more money, more freedom and more fun out of work! However, what you don’t know can really hurt you (i.e. taxes, insurance and getting paid). In this webinar, 20-year consulting pro Catherine Byers Breet will help you figure out two critical things:

  1. Is consulting right for you?
  2. Is now the right time for you to ditch the corporate ladder?

About the speaker:  Catherine Byers Breet hired her first PMP – certified project management consultant in 1997. She also attended her first PMI meeting that year. Twenty years later, she’s still working with project managers from all over the world. In June of this year, she flew to China to speak at their PMI - Shanghai chapter. Since launching her own consulting firm in 2006, Catherine has helped over 68,000 professionals how to accelerate their careers … and build the life they want. Thousands of them have chosen to become consultants. Using Catherine’s approach, Eric DOUBLED his income his first year out. Terri just TRIPLED her hourly rate. Stephen was so successful he just took an entire year off and traveled the world with his family. Bottom line: Catherine knows what it takes to succeed as a project management consultant. She can’t wait to give you the tools & information you need to make the right decision for your family (and your career).

P.S. Bring your burning questions! Catherine will stop and take them throughout the webinar.

What you’ll learn:

  • The good, the bad & the “Are you KIDDING me?”
  • The Top 3 reasons consultants fail
  • How to mitigate your risk and make $$ FAST
  • Is consulting right for you?
