Message from the President

“You don’t need a position or title to make a difference; you just need passion, purpose and people who are willing to go along the ride with you,” affirms human behavior expert and this year’s PDD keynote, Betsy Allen-Manning. Undoubtedly, in my twelve months as PMI-MN’s Chapter President, one quality that stands out above and beyond all else is PASSION. Each and every chapter member, committee member, volunteer, and board director cares deeply and genuinely for the betterment of our project management community. Accordingly, it is that time of year when gifts are given and cherished while dazzling snowflakes whirl through the chilly air. It is also a time to be givers and help each other succeed. Needless to say, the gift of passion for our industry encompasses us all.

My passion for our Chapter stems from our distinguished accomplishments of 2019:

  • Professional Development Days was exceptionally successful and achieved an attendance of over 500
  • Our 133 volunteers have collaborated with our Chapter leadership & members, gained additional professional experience, learned new skills, and contributed to valuable project management work for PMI-MN
  • Membership has expanded exponentially with 104 new members in 2019
  • Our Community Service Programs have connected us with the community to share gifts with those less fortunate
  • Captivating monthly programs, pioneered by Programs Chair Craig Kilford, provided learning, sharing, and networking opportunities among students and project managers
  • Membership retention rate is up 10 percent from 2018 at 80 percent
  • PMI-MN holds the esteemed privilege of being the 14th largest chapter at 3,772 members

Special recognition to our volunteers who have made the Chapter a success this past year.  With over twelve years volunteering with non-profits, I have a deep appreciation for dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  As we ramp up to the 2020 year we have many new volunteer opportunities open for members to join our team of professional project managers. Please consider becoming a PMI-MN volunteer. I know that there is no greater reward than the opportunity to volunteer with passionate volunteers in an outstanding organization.

The year 2019 has realized positive changes for the Chapter including new policy changes. I encourage everyone to view and read the Amended Policy Manual on our website. These amendments are crucial in aligning our Chapter with PMI Global; both our Chapter and PMI Global share a promising vision for the project management economy. These policies such as the Finance Committee’s Gift Card policy and Volunteer Committee’s Credit Hours policy will help execute our mission of providing value to members and the community through opportunities for career development and to advocate the advancement of the project management profession and its disciplines.

In the coming year, under the direction of our incoming Chapter President Sara Swanson, PMP®, the Board will collaborate with members as we aspire to be recognized globally as a premier, best-in-class, innovative community of project managers who embrace world class practices. I am eager to see Sara take the helm of the Chapter’s leadership beginning January 1, 2020 and flourish our passion into new accomplishments.

I look forward to our Chapter helping not only experienced but also new project managers enhance their skills, reinforce their passion, and discover insurmountable success in our project management economy. We are in this together, this is our community, this is our Minnesota Chapter.  Let’s continue to innovate and prosper in 2020. Thank you for the opportunity to have served as your 2019 Chapter President.

May your holidays be filled with peace, joy, love and passion.  A very Happy New Year to everyone.

Regards,

Janice Pyka PMI-Minnesota Chapter, MPM, MBA

PMI Value Tree

Sara Swanson, PMP® (President 2020), Kimberly Berger (PDD Chair 2020) and Michael O’Connor, PMP®, PgMP® (Director at Large 2019-2020) recently had an opportunity to walk the halls of PMI’s headquarters in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, as part of the PMI® Leadership Institute Meeting October 2019—North America.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to headquarters, and were fortunate to meet a variety of people and get insight into many programs during this time and celebration of PMI’s 50th anniversary.

We were able to see the life-size dashboard on the third floor: the Value Tree. The Value Tree is how PMI measures success, and is a visual that shows how we can all travel this journey together as we empower people to make ideas a reality. Now, there is a video that explains this new way PMI is measuring success as we empower people to make ideas a reality.

The following outline is a brief overview of the PMI Value Tree:

PMI delivers value for nearly 3 million professionals working in nearly every country in the world, to enhance their careers and mature the project management profession.

PMI offers value products and services:

  • Membership
  • Certification
  • Online Learning
  • Publications
  • And more

PMI ensures to invest in the future and continuing to serve their stakeholders. PMI is focused on being more metric driven and focused in these metrics going forward.

PMI Has created the Value Tree to illustrate how focusing on efficiency and success of their business will, in turn, create more value for their customers.

  • Customer growth, over 500,000 members
  • Certification, over 1.5 million certification holders

Metrics:

  • Customer Lifetime Value (CLV), create a long-term relationship
  • Customer Growth, increase membership
  • Net promoter Score, index that measures customer satisfaction, move the NPS score up
  • Leadership, empower people and successful outcomes with strategic initiatives

The bottom line is that PMI wants to be the undisputed global leader in project management. It is an exciting time and the future is even brighter.

We encourage you to learn more about the Value Tree with this video, and to share it with others in your network.

Warm Regards,

Sara, Kimberly and Michael
