Message from the President Welcome PMI Minnesota Community! I hope you are all staying safe and warm! This freezing winter weather has allowed us to stay inside and enjoy some hot cocoa while checking out the latest flicks on Hulu and Netflix. For many of us in the PMI Minnesota community, the new year is an opportunity to look forward and think about what we would like to accomplish in 2021. As you look forward and plan your professional development with PMI Minnesota, and PMI Global in mind, there are wonderful resources and opportunities to learn and grow your career with PMI! PMI Global offers incredible certification options to grow and expand your project management career. PMI’s certification options vary from industry standard and widely known credentials, to specialized certifications that highlight project management niche skillsets. These certifications recognize your advanced expertise in the project management profession and are used to demonstrate industry skills and abilities. Key certifications that you may want to add to your development plan for 2021 are: - Project Management Professional (PMP): Premier project management professional certification, internationally recognized as the gold standard in demonstrating project management proficiency.
- Disciplined Agile (DASM | DASSM | DAC| DAVSC): There are multiple Disciplined Agile (DA) certifications to recognize the various levels and capabilities within the leading-edge practices of DA. These are new to PMI’s line-up, so check them out and learn more about them!
- Certified Associated in Project Management (CAPM): This introductory certification in Project Management is a great launching pad for your foray into the field of Project Management.
- There are several other certifications that allow Project Management Professionals to demonstrate their specialty capabilities:
- Program Management Professional & Portfolio Management Professional (PgMP | PfMP)
- PMI Risk Management Professional & PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-RMP | PMI-SP)
What can PMI Minnesota do to help you BEFORE and AFTER you have achieved your certification? We have fantastic professional development options to help our members wherever they are on their professional development journey! If you are on your path before certification, PMI Minnesota traditionally hosted PMP preparation courses over the span of several weekday evenings once per quarter. In 2021, to align with PMI Global’s updated Authorized Training Practitioner program, PMI Minnesota will now host “boot camp” style training courses for both the PMP and Disciplined Agile certifications. Our first Discipline Agile Scrum Master Certification Prep Course of the year is will be held March 25-26. Additionally, join us for our PMP Certification Prep Course held April 19-23. Visit join-us.pmi-mn.org to register and learn more. We are excited to make the switch and partner with ATP providers to continue this service for our members! Many of our members are interested in opportunities to obtain Professional Development Units (PDUs) to keep their certifications current. PMI Minnesota offers several opportunities to maintain your PMI credentials throughout the year. - Through our Member Program Services, we offer Breakfast, Dinner, and free Lunch & Learn meetings (virtually through at least Fall 2021) in which 1 PDU is typically awarded.
- Our Professional Development Services team plans seminars varying in length throughout the year focusing on trending topics of interest. PDUs are awarded for time spent during the seminar.
- Our Outreach Community Services hosts free Lunch & Learn forums throughout the year that are open to anyone in the Project Management community. Typically 1 PDU is allocated per educational session.
- Annually, we host our Professional Development Days (PDD) event. PDD is an excellent way to obtain many PDU credits over the course of our educational event! We hope to host PDD in-person on September 27-30 this year at the RiverCentre in St. Paul. We will continue to evaluate COVID-19 as the safety of our members, volunteers, and their families remains our top priority.
PMI Global and PMI Minnesota have so much to offer our members, and broader Professional Management community. No matter what stage we are in in our career, what goals we are pursuing, or what we have planned next to learn and grow, there is always something new to discover at PMI!
Sincerely, Ruth Birkholz, PMP® PMI MN President, CEO |

Effectively Dealing with Workplace Disrespect March 15 | 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM | Virtual | PDU:1 | Leadership
Join us for our Virtual March Chapter Dinner with speaker Paul Pelletier! Research shows that more than 70% of workers have been impacted by disrespectful workplace behavior. Disrespect in project management comes in many forms: rudeness, sabotage, gossip, bullying, harassment, ignoring, demeaning, controlling and the list goes on. Regardless of the type, bad behavior poisons the work environment. Its impact is enormous: disengagement; loss of creativity and productivity; and sick leave, benefit and turnover costs. It not only creates dysfunctional workplaces, it can impact your project teams, client relationships, reputation and bottom line. Fortunately, there are many proactive, preventative measures that you can take to manage disrespect. With many tools and an action plan, everyone in your workplace can create an effective strategy to prevent, manage and eliminate your workplace nightmare. The focus of this presentation is on providing leaders with tools for approaching and resolving disrespect issues, before they become full-blown conflicts or poison a team. Critical to disrespect management, participants will develop strategies for changing the context of bad behavior from negative to positive, from disrespectful to appropriate.
